A Fan's Guide to the Race to Mackinac

July 19, 2016 04:46 PM

With 326 boats participating in the 333-mile journey from Chicago to Mackinac Island this year, the 108th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, presented by Wintrust will offer plenty of opportunities for fans to view the boats on land, on the water, and from anywhere else you might be. Here’s how you can see and track the 2016 race.

Pre-Race Coverage on Land
See the Boats from Monroe Station
In the days leading up to the Race to Mackinac, many race boats are docked at the Chicago Yacht Club's Monroe Station at the corner of Lake Shore Drive and Monroe in Chicago. The boats are easy to see from the lakeshore path just north of Monroe Street.
See the Parade of Boats from Navy Pier
Michigan Avenue Magazine's Ashore Thing, presented by BMO Harris Bank on Saturday, July 23 10 a.m.-2 p.m., provides a great opportunity for the public as well as family and friends of Mac sailors to see the boats pass by the end of Navy Pier on their way to the start. The event is free and open to the public, but we suggest you RSVP.
Pre-Race Coverage on the Water
If you have access to a boat, you can watch the racers start and head north up Lake Michigan. However, please be aware that there is a safety zone around the start area which the USCG will be patrolling to keep spectators from interfering with racers. We also request that boaters stay well clear of the racing boats at all times, and that power boats in particular attempt to steer clear. Boat wakes and wind shadows can have a huge effect on a racing sailboat. Please honor the Race and common boating courtesy by keeping wakes to a minimum and staying at least 500 yards away from all racing boats. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Coverage During the Race
Fifteen boats have been selected to act as on-the-water reporters. Using enhanced YB Tracking devices (see below), these boats will be able to post short updates to Twitter during the Race. These updates will appear on the Race's Twitter feed @cycracetomackinac. Follow us on Twitter, or view the feed on the Mac homepage.
Track the Race Wherever You Are
Follow the Race Social MediaFacebook_for_FG
The Race has a strong presence on both Facebook,  Twitter and Instagram.   Leading up to and during the Race, we will frequently post updates and photos from Chicago, the lake and the island updates so competitors, friends and family can stay tuned in with what's happening.
Twitter_for_FGAdditionally, many crew members and boats have their own Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as accounts on Instagram and other similar social media outlets. We are encouraging all participants to tag their posts and Tweets and photos with #CYCRTM to make it easier for you to search for them.Instagram_for_FG
For those interested in real-time updates while the Race in under way, more than a dozen boats will be enabled with GPS transponders to Tweet during the Race again this year. They will all appear under the Race's Twitter account and be tagged with the tweeting boat’s name. For live updates, follow @RaceToMackinac and join the conversation with #CYCRTM. We hope this on-the-water coverage will help bring the Race home to all of you.
new_unit_in_handGPS Tracking via YB Tracking
YB Tracking, the leading provider of tracking services for offshore yacht races, equips each racing boat with a tracker that sends a ping about every 10 minutes through a satellite showing its location on the race course. There are two ways to see the live tracking:

From Your Computer
Tracking is available via a link at the top of the Mac homepage, under the "Race Tracking" tab. Ensure that your computer has a relatively recent (2012 or later) browser installed, such as Internet Explorer 10 or later, Google Chrome 23 or later, Firefox 20 or later, or Safari 6 or later.

From Your Phone or Tablet
For the best experience on your mobile device (iOS or Android), download the free app.
1. Visit the YB Tracking website to download and install the app.
2. "Buy" the 108th CYC Race to Mackinac in the YB Tracking app. The Race will appear in available races on Thursday, July 21. The race will be available at no charge to our fans and friends; the Mac is covering the cost of it.

We hope all of our friends and family have fun watching us and following the 108th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, presented by Wintrust.
