Notes from the Mac #5: The Round the Island Race

July 8, 2018 11:12 PM

Don’t let the racing end just because you crossed the finish line and the awards party is over! As the rafts break up on Wednesday, consider staying on the Island for one more day of great, fun distance racing.

The Mackinac Island Yacht Club (MIYC) will be hosting the Eleventh Annual Chicago Mac Race Week - Round the Island Race. The race is open to all sailboats in the Chicago Mac Race and all boats in the Mackinac area

Said one participant: "As an island goat (ok, old goat) I have raced to Mackinac Island over 25 times, but last year was the first time I ever actually sailed around the island. And it was incredible! The back side of the island is beautiful, and quiet. The water is amazingly clear and calm. The island coastline is only about 8 miles, so the race took us less than 2 hours (winds were light). During which time the crew spent far more time staring at the island than the sails."

"More good news is that it is usually/always a very easy jib and main reach around the entire island. I think we might have tacked 4 times during the entire race. Since the wind is almost always out of the west/south you will want to stay offshore and in the breeze, where the water is 90 feet deep."

Immediately following the race, the awards ceremony and party will be held at Mackinac Island Yacht Club with food, drinks, and lots of fun. Prizes include brag flags and keeper trophies.
