Onboard Reporting 101

It doesn’t take a professional camera crew and a news anchor to capture the excitement and emotion of your teams Race to Mackinac experience, just a GoPro or cell phone camera, and a little creativity! Here are some do’s and don’ts of being your own on-board reporter to capture the experience of racing in America’s Offshore Challenge.

Most importantly, remember to include #CYCRTM in your posts for a chance to be featured across our Race social media channels!

DO capture all parts of the race.

From getting ready, casting off the dock, and sailing past your favorite landmarks to the infamous Mackinac Island bars after the finish, don’t hesitate to pull out your camera and capture the action. If a crew member wants to volunteer to do a daily report (and share it to our Race Communications Team), take them up on it!

DON’T sacrifice safety for the shot.

Think holding your cell phone over the lifeline or leaning off the stern will get a better shot? Don’t risk your device or your own safety for a few seconds of video.

DO get creative.

Grab a time-lapse of the sunset or sunrise. Want an ‘artsy’ shot of the bow cutting through the waves, go for it! If your crew has a favorite song to keep up the morale, capture the fun they are having onboard!

DO feature people.

Introduce your crew or have them introduce themselves. Is this their first Mac race or their 30th? Do they have a hidden talent or a fun fact, show us! The best part of onboard footage is that it’s authentic. If something exciting is happening on deck, whip out your camera and ask someone to explain what is going on. Quick quotes, genuine reactions and your team’s individual personalities will help immerse your viewers in the racing.

DON’T be afraid to selfie!

Can’t grab the reaction of a teammate? Don’t hesitate to give yourself a little credit. Giving a first-hand account of the race is a great way to tell your team’s story!

TAG THE RACE! #CYCRTM

Our social media team is excited to share your content and in-race experiences. Here’s how to give it the best shot to be featured across our Race Channels:

WHAT TO SEND:

  • Include your Boat Name, location and #CYCRTM
  • Send photos via mobile to 773.960.3960
  • Keep photos to 300kbs for easier sending
Wishing you an exciting and colorful race! We can’t wait to see more of your adventure when you hit the dock at Mackinac Island.
