About the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac

In 107 years since 1898, sailors have gathered in Chicago to begin the 333-mile sailing race to Mackinac Island, Mich. The Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac is one of the oldest and most prestigious freshwater sailing races. Affectionately known as "the Mac," the race hosts approximately 330 boats and 3,000 sailors who compete in this world-class sporting event.

The Talent

Although the Mac remains an amateur event, the race has a proven track record of attracting some of the finest sailing talent in the sport. Record-holders include the renowned late sailor Roy Disney with his monohull Pyewacket at 23 hours, 30 minutes and 34 seconds in 2002, and the late famous adventurer Steve Fossett on Stars and Stripes, which set the multihull record of 18 hours, 50 minutes and 32 seconds in 1998.

Follow the Race Wherever You Are

The promise of exciting competition and shore-based events around the race allow families, friends and colleagues to participate in the race festivities. Boats are tracked by GPS satellite technology enabling all fans on shore to follow the race as it unfolds online as well as through a race tracking app for smartphones and tablets. You may also follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@RacetoMackinac) to follow the race and interact with fellow race fans. Merchandise is available for sale.
