The Whitehawk Trophy

The Chicago Yacht Club and the Race to Mackinac are excited to announce a major new trophy for the Race.   Chicago Yacht Club members Marijane and Peter Thornton have generously donated the Whitehawk Trophy, which will be presented to the overall corrected-time winner for the Cruising Division.  The impressive trophy was built in 1877 by Stephen Smith for Smith & Son, London in 1877 and will provide the Cruising Division—the fastest-growing Division in the race—with a prize on par with the other major trophies awarded to our Racing Divisions.  The trophy is named for Whitehawk, the Thorntons’ 105 foot yacht that competes regularly in the Race’s Cruising Division. The trophy will be placed in a permanent location, along with Chicago Yacht Club’s collection, in the Monroe station foyer.

Reminder: 2023 ORC certificate applications now open:

US Sailing has announced that applications for 2023 ORC Certificates are now being accepted. They have improved several areas across the application process, data management, and validation rules. There is also a new system of entering sail measurement data from sailmakers directly, and they have streamlined the measurement data process for measurers.

The Mac Race & CYC Foundation helping to bring Chicago youth to the Lakefront

The Chicago Yacht Club Foundation and the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust are joining forces to bring underserved kids to the water before this year’s Mac Race.
From July 14 to 18, the CYC Foundation will be offering a total of nine sailing expeditions for kids aboard the 77-foot-long tall ship Inland Seas.  Participants will board at CYC Monroe Street Station and once aboard will become scientists and sailors. Upon return they will feel more connected to the Great Lakes and understand their part in taking care of this important natural resource.
Stay tuned for more information on this exciting program and ways the fleet can support it. For more information on the Foundation, visit www.chicagoyachtclubfoundation.org.
